1. Why are "combo sets" becoming popular?
There are two main reasons:
the "evolution of ball performance" and "changes in green conditions."
Increased difficulty of long irons
Modern golf balls have evolved to suppress spin to enhance distance performance.
As a result, with conventional muscle-back (01 series) long irons, even with a pro's head speed, it has become more difficult for the ball to get airborne, and increasingly, insufficient spin makes it harder to stop the ball on the green.
Role change from "distance" to "stopping"
For pros, long irons (4-5 iron) are not just for gaining distance.
They are clubs for targeting the pin with a high trajectory and stopping the ball firmly on the green.
Therefore, there's an increasing trend to combine long to mid-irons with
forgiving models featuring thicker soles or hollow structures.
