1. Why are "combo sets" becoming popular?
There are two main reasons for this:
the evolution of ball performance and changes in green environments.
Increased difficulty of long irons
Modern golf balls have evolved to suppress spin to increase distance.
As a result, with traditional muscle-back (01 series) long irons, even professional swing speeds make it difficult for the ball to get airborne, and there are increasing cases where lack of spin makes it difficult for the ball to stop on the green.
Change in role from "distance" to "stopping power"
For professionals, long irons (4-5 iron) are not just about gaining distance.
They are clubs for aiming at the pin with a high trajectory and stopping the ball firmly on the green.
Therefore, there is an increasing trend to combine highly forgiving models for long to middle irons,
such as those with thicker soles or hollow structures.
