1. Why are "combo sets" gaining popularity?
There are two main reasons:
the evolution of ball performance and changes in green conditions.
Increased difficulty of long irons
Modern golf balls are evolving to reduce spin in order to improve distance performance.
As a result, with conventional muscle-back (01 series) long irons, it is becoming increasingly difficult for even professional head speeds to get the ball up, and a lack of spin makes it harder to stop the ball on the green.
Role change from "distance" to "stopping"
For professionals, long irons (4-5 iron) are not just about gaining distance.
They are clubs for aiming at the pin with a high trajectory and stopping the ball firmly on the green.
Therefore, there is a growing trend to combine highly forgiving models for long to mid-irons, which feature thicker sole designs and hollow structures.
