＜PRGR Iron Strongest Combo＞
An "iron combo set" simply refers to a club setup where different models of irons are combined within a single set.
It used to be common to have the same model from the 5-iron to the PW, but in recent years, among tour pros,
"easier long to mid-irons, and control-oriented short irons"
has become the mainstream way of using them.
1. Why are "combo sets" popular?
There are two main reasons.
These are "the evolution of ball performance" and "changes in green conditions."
Increased difficulty of long irons
Modern golf balls have evolved to suppress spin in order to improve distance performance.
As a result, with conventional muscle-back (01 series) long irons, even with a pro's head speed, it has become increasingly difficult for the ball to get airborne and for insufficient spin to hold the green.
Shift in role from "distance" to "stopping power"
For pros, long irons (4-5 irons) are not just about gaining distance.
They are clubs for aiming at the pin with a high trajectory and stopping the ball firmly on the green.
Therefore, for long to mid-irons,
there's an increasing trend to combine highly forgiving models that feature thicker sole designs or hollow structures.
