We've varied the lamination pattern for each club number. The long and mid-irons feature a high-balance design, allowing for a natural swing-through and increased launch angle from the flex return of the tip and middle section.
The short irons are designed to allow golfers to control the ball by feeling the flex at the grip end while suppressing movement at the tip.
Simply put, an "iron combo set" is a club setup that combines different iron models within a single set.
While it was once common to have "the same model from 5-iron to PW," in recent years, a different approach has become mainstream among tour professionals:
"Easy-to-hit long to mid-irons, and short irons prioritizing workability."
1. Why are "combo sets" gaining popularity?
There are two main reasons:
They are "the evolution of ball performance" and "changes in green conditions."
Increasing difficulty of long irons
Modern golf balls are evolving to reduce spin in order to improve distance performance.
As a result, with traditional muscle-back (01 series) long irons, even professional head speeds can struggle to get the ball airborne, and there's an increasing number of cases where insufficient spin makes it difficult for the ball to hold the green.
Role change from "distance" to "stopping"
For professionals, long irons (4-5 iron) are not just about gaining distance.
They are clubs for aiming at the pin with a high trajectory and stopping the ball firmly on the green.
Therefore, there's a growing trend to combine highly forgiving models for long to mid-irons, such as those with thicker sole designs or hollow structures.
2. If building with PRGR? Recommended combo
PRGR's 01-02 series is actually a lineup that makes building combo sets very easy.
Classic Athlete Combo: 01 × 02
・4-6 Iron: 02 IRON (Easy to hit with a high trajectory for distance)
・7-Iron to PW: 01 IRON (Prioritizing workability and feel)
Key points
Because the 02 6-iron (28°) is combined with the 01 7-iron (32°),
the loft progression is natural, and there's little difference in feel, allowing for a combo setup without any sense of discomfort.
