Increased difficulty of long irons
Modern golf balls have evolved to suppress spin to enhance distance performance.
As a result, with conventional muscle-back (01 series) long irons, even with a pro's head speed, it has become increasingly difficult to get the ball airborne and stop it on the green due to insufficient spin.
Role change from "distance" to "stopping"
For pros, long irons (4-5 iron) are not just for gaining distance.
