Long and mid irons for high trajectory, short irons for control. There are two main reasons.
They are "the evolution of ball performance" and "changes in green conditions."
Increased difficulty of long irons
Modern golf balls have evolved in a direction that suppresses spin to improve distance performance.
As a result, with conventional muscle-back (01 series) long irons, it has become increasingly difficult for even professional golfers to get the ball up in the air, and a lack of spin often makes it difficult to stop the ball on the green.
Role change from "distance" to "stopping"
For professionals, long irons (4-5 iron) are not just for gaining distance.
They are clubs for aiming at the pin with a high trajectory and stopping the ball firmly on the green.
Therefore, there is an increasing trend to combine highly forgiving models for long to mid irons, such as those with thicker sole designs and hollow structures.
