The RAUNE series is a line of high-performance carbon shafts developed by Graphite Design with the theme of "targeting." The design philosophy, which began with wedges, has been applied to irons to achieve excellent directionality and feel.
Using a lamination technique different from the TOUR AD series, the material composition is optimized for each club number. This ensures that each club performs according to its required role, supporting consistent shots.
For long irons, the balance point closer to the grip enhances swing-through. The snap-back of the mid-tip section creates a high launch angle, making it easier to get the ball airborne.
For short irons, the flex feel at the grip is utilized while controlling tip movement. This design delivers high control performance, allowing for delicate shots aimed at the pin.
An "iron combo set" simply means combining different iron models within a single set.
While it was once common to have the same model from 5-iron to pitching wedge, in recent years, among tour professionals,
"easy-to-hit long to mid irons, and control-focused short irons"
has become the mainstream approach.
1. Why are "combo sets" popular?
There are two main reasons.
These are "the evolution of ball performance" and "changes in green conditions."
Increased difficulty of long irons
Modern golf balls have evolved to reduce spin to increase distance.
As a result, with conventional muscle-back (01 series) long irons, even professional head speeds struggle to get the ball airborne, and insufficient spin often makes it difficult to stop the ball on the green.
Role change from "distance" to "stopping"
For professionals, long irons (4-5 iron) are not just for gaining distance.
They are clubs for targeting the pin with a high trajectory and stopping the ball firmly on the green.
Therefore, for long to mid-irons,
there is a growing trend to combine highly forgiving models with thicker soles or hollow structures.
2. What if you're building with PRGR? Recommended Combos
PRGR's 01-02 series is actually a very easy lineup to create combo settings with.
Classic Athlete Combo: 01 x 02
・4-6 iron: 02 IRON (high trajectory, easy distance)
・7-iron to PW: 01 IRON (emphasis on control and feel)
Key points
Since the 7-iron of the 01 (32° loft) is combined with the 6-iron of the 02 (28°),
the loft progression is natural, and with little difference in feel, a seamless combo setting is possible.
