Increased difficulty of long irons
Modern golf balls have evolved to suppress spin to improve distance performance.
As a result, with conventional muscle-back (01 series) long irons, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the ball to get airborne even with a pro's head speed, and a lack of spin makes it difficult for the ball to stop on the green.
Role change from "driving" to "stopping"
For pros, long irons (4-5 iron) are not just clubs for gaining distance.
They are clubs for aiming at the pin with a high trajectory and stopping the ball firmly on the green.
Therefore, for long to mid-irons,
there is an increasing trend to combine highly forgiving models that feature thicker soles and hollow structures.
